about martin
Guitarist and composer Martín Theurillat moves fluidly across genres, crafting music that reflects his unique heritage and experiences.
Born into a Chilean-Swiss family and shaped by his upbringing in Chile, Martín’s music blends the influences of his roots with his later training as a jazz musician. This combination has led to a distinctive style that draws from diverse inspirations while resisting easy categorization. For Martín, music is a space for exploration, where tradition and innovation come together in meaningful ways.
Now based in Basel, Switzerland, Martín refined his skills at the JazzCampus (Musik Akademie). Along the way, he has learned from and collaborated with celebrated artists such as Lionel Loueke, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Ambrose Akinmusire, Guillermo Klein, and Chris Cheek among others. These experiences have shaped his music and fostered strong connections with mentors and peers.
As an active member of the Swiss music scene, Martín contributes to a variety of projects, including Katom, Mantocliff, and Hello Pillow (a duo with Raphael Rossé). He also works with ensembles like Francesca Gaza's Kugelvörmigkeit and collaborates in a duo with Alexandre Cahen. In addition to leading his own Martin Theurillat Quartet, he explores new sonic possibilities in his solo electronic project, Martan Dimanch.
With a focus on combining traditional and modern elements, Martín’s music is a reflection of his curiosity and dedication to growth as an artist.
